St Louis County School Districts and Universities

Client:

St. Louis County, Missouri

Location:

2,500 kW of roof-top solar on multiple buildings

Scope:

3,250,000 kWh

Estimated Annual Production:

We served as engineer-of-record, developer, and construction manager for over 80 solar-PV projects for educational institutions, public and private, K-12 and universities. These all were competitively bid projects and many also were structured as Design-Build-Own-Operate (DBOO). These projects total approximately 2,500 kW of roof-mounted solar-PV across multiple buildings managed by the multiple school districts. The projects were developed using an operating-lease agreement providing a convertible 6-year term for the districts. Owners include Washington University, Webster University, St Louis University, Clayton School District, Francis Howell School District, Rockwood School District, De Smet Jesuit High School, and Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS).

Design Rationale and System Architecture: This program required multiple design configurations and solutions for securing the arrays to a variety of different roof types, including standing seam steel, tile, membrane flat and pitched structures, and custom-designed insulated panels. The designs utilized string inverters with a common monitoring platform. The design for many of the properties included a wall-mounted monitor for display of system performance and other related information.

Project Challenges: As noted above, there was a variety of design constraints. One of the more difficult systems required additional testing to test the failure tolerance of the roof attachment needed to support a 100 kW system.  The independent testing required building a mock-up model of the roof since it was a custom design with no industry validated performance data. We worked closely with the project architect and builder to test and deploy the system, coordinating with multiple trades for access and temporary power for turn-up and commissioning.

“Marc’s team provided exceptional service and support throughout the entire project. We always knew what to expect, what was happening, and that all the work was done with the highest regard for safety. The Project Managers were extremely knowledgeable and very professional in their implementation of the project.”
